Ocean Week Canada - Water Rangers

Since 2022, we have worked with Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition (COLC) as they establish a unified and amplified Ocean Week Canada.

Ocean Week Canada- an annual event where we celebrate the ocean from coast to coast to coast (and, in our case, especially inland in our freshwater streams). It’s the week that surrounds World Ocean Day (June 8th). How did you celebrate Ocean Week this year?

We loved supporting Ocean Week in 2023!

We worked closely with the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition, who worked with many other partners to amplify Ocean Week events. Our goal was to encourage more people who had never engaged in Ocean Week activities, especially inland, to take part in their first Ocean Week celebration!

From coast to coast to coast!

Through our program, we were able to engage with friends across the country, helping equip them with testkits, ideas, and enthusiasm for their Ocean Week events. Yes, we helped co-organize over 300 events!
Ocean-themed parkruns!

We helped co-organize 8 ocean-themed parkruns across the country, where people showed their love for the ocean by dressing up as ocean creatures! Thanks to parkruns in Truro (Nova Scotia), Saint-Paulin (Quebec), Montreal (Quebec), Gatineau (Quebec), Kanata (Ontario), Kitchener (Ontario), Coquitlam (BC), and Vancouver (BC) for their enthusiasm and creativity!

Of course, we did some water testing and shoreline cleanups!

What better way to make freshwater connections to the ocean than to test the water? Shoutout to all the keen water testers who joined us at 9 events across the country, plus our 23 partner-led events. Special mention to Ocean Wise's Youth to Sea cohort in Ottawa, who also completed a shoreline cleanup!

Empowering young Rangers

We were overwhelmed by how fast almost 300 young Earth Rangers took up the challenge to test the water and celebrate the ocean! Within hours, all the spots were taken. Thank you to all the youth for being so inspirational!

Each youth was equipped with a Tiny Testkit, and prompted to do more for waterways.

Celebrating in Ottawa

We met over 300 people to show them the ocean map, demonstrate water testing, and introduce local water stewards, Ottawa Riverkeeper. If you visited the Ottawa sign on June 3, you'd have seen it lit up in blue for Ocean Week!

We also shared Ocean Week, the giant ocean map, and water testing during EnviroFair. So many people told us this was the first time they had heard about the events.

Did you join us on the "Canoe Scavenger Hunt"? We hosted a live session in Ottawa and shared a DIY version that anyone could do anywhere (canoe or not), reaching over 5,000 people. We hope it helped you connect to the ocean!
