For many years CBWM leaders have wanted to better quantify and communicate their contribution to Canadian water management and build their case for stable, long-term support. In 2021, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) developed a strong business case for investment in CBWM: A Business Case for Investment in Canadian Community-Based Water Monitoring (CBWM). It was created with input from CBWM groups across Canada. They looked at the research, documented case studies, and applied market and financial analysis. They concluded that CBWM is critically important to good decision making, it is financially cost effective and is deserving of sustainable funding. They also concluded that it is difficult for each CBWM organization to fully understand and communicate the value they provide.

Water Rangers picks up where the IISD A Business Case for Investment in Canadian Community-Based Water Monitoring (CBWM) left off, developing a guidebook and toolkit for the case for investment in CBWM.
