Web Developer

We are seeking a Web Developer to work with us from December 1, 2020, for a minimum of 4 months. Working on our open data platform for water quality data, you will be implementing some new software features that improve our user’s experience. You will be working with a database, map optimization, a Ruby-on-Rails platform, and help optimize data management. Some work to improve performance as we have more users on the platform, too.

For this position, we’re looking for someone with skills in: 

  • Database management 
  • Minimum 3 years experience in software development, with some examples of projects using Ruby-on-Rails 
  • Project examples using maps and user management also a big asset
  • Source control using GitHub 
  • Good communication skills are a must 
  • Experience in React Native is an asset, but not required 
  • You must be a Canadian resident and under 30 years of age to participate.

A degree in software engineering or a similar field is desirable, but not required as we believe in ‘show not tell’ when it comes to skills and experience. An interest in protecting the environment and making a difference for water is important, though! We are a small non-profit, whose aim is to make it easier for anyone to test waterways. As a small team, there are lots of opportunities for on-the-job skills development, taking ownership of your project, including project management, software development processes, and more. All your code will be reviewed by a senior developer and you will work closely with our Executive Director, who has a background in product, web design, and front-end development to ensure your projects are well-defined.

During the first week, you will be introduced to our systems and approaches and be assigned some small tasks that help them learn our software set-ups. You will also spend time with each member of the team to learn about what they do and our priorities. You will be told about work processes as well as the opportunity for online training (you will get to choose what course you wish to do). Every week, we will review their work and set goals for the upcoming week.

You will be paid a salary of $6,250/month, working 37 hours per week, including national holidays, plus accrue pro-rata, 15 days holidays per year (e.g. 5 days holidays in 4 months).
